You wake up one morning and is shocked when you look at the mirror. A pimple is just beginning to form on your face. You are thinking of squeezing it so that it can disappear. However, squeezing it will make it worse. If you dislike new pimples, then you can use spot treatment such as sulfur acne products. But how effective are they?
Sulfur acne medication has been used for centuries. During the old days, people with skin problems travel many miles to volcanic springs. They will stay in the pool which help them to heal their skin diseases. Today, many acne treatment products contain sulfur. It has anti-bacterial properties which limits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. It also has keratoloytic effect which shed off the dead cells from the surface of the skin. This clears the clogged pores.
Different acne care products use different applications. You need to wash some of them after apply it for a moment. Some of them can be left on the skin for hours before rinsing. This kind of application works best for mild acne. Most of the sulfur acne products are used as spot treatments for zits, blackheads, and whiteheads. Sulfur acne products work more effectively when they use other ingredients such as sodium sulfacetamide, zinc, benzoyl peroxide, and bentonite. Sodium sulfacetamide contain anti-bacterial properties which restrict certain acids required by the bacteria for their development. It can reduce inflammatory lesions effectively when used with sulfur. Zinc helps to liquefied debris trapped deep within pores. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria while Bentonite, a natural clay, helps to absorb impurities and sebum in the pores. As you can see, each of these substance works differently in treating acne. A combination with sulfur will improve the effectiveness of the sulfur acne treatment in controlling acne.
You wonder why some of these products can help to reduce inflammation or redness which usually accompanied with acne. For soothing effect, the skin care manufacturers add geranium extract and tea tree leaf oil to the sulfur acne products.
Most of the sulfur acne products comes in creams, facial cleansers, masks, and soaps. They are available as either prescribed or non-prescribed over-the-counter treatment. The sulfur strength in these products range from three to six percent. The clinical strength is usually ten percent which can help to treat acne vulgaris. Some people don't like to use these products because of the strong, unpleasant smell.
Although sulfur is a natural anti-biotic and anti-fungal agent which helps to reduce pimple breakouts but not serious conditions such as acne scar, you still have to seek medical approval before you use it. They are excellent for mild conditions of pimples. However, not everyone has enjoyed the success of using sulfur acne products. Your dermatologist can advise if you should use them.
