Acne Medications – How do You Choose?

Although there is a broad variety of medical treatments available for acne, there is no such a thing like a single, effective acne treatment that practically works for any acne sufferer. In fact, dermatologists and skin specialists regularly have to test a few products for each patient before they figure out the proper treatment or the right combination of different treatments that will let the acne vanish.
Every case and every acne sufferer must be treated differently, depending on the type and severity of the patient´s acne. That´s the reason why acne is such a hard skin illness to treat and heal. A lot of experimentation and trial and error with various medications is normally needed before a successful treatment is found. This can be very frustrating for the person that wants a quick-fix solution to their problem or even for those individuals that have a stubborn strain of acne that takes a long time to clear up. The first thing to do is to find a doctor or skin specialist in your area that is experienced in treating acne, just ask around a bit.
There are some absolute ‘no nos’ when it comes to dealing with acne. Never scrub your face or the by acne affected area. It doesn´t do any good, in fact, scrubbing causes irritation and inflammation of your acne, which leads to even more pimples. It also slows down the healing of your older acne lesions.
Also never try to self-treat or self-medicate your acne. Don´t squeeze or pick your pimples. If required at all, leave this to your professional and experienced dermatologist. generally the first treatment your doctor suggests you is applying a topical cream. These creams, like all acne treatments, do not cure acne, but rather help to manage the symptoms of the acne.
The treatment that you receive will depend on the kind of symptoms that you are experiencing. There are usually 2 different approaches to fighting acne. Either the chosen treatment aims to kill the acne causing bacteria, helps to unplug your skin pores and reduces the level of oil produced in your skin (treatments such as Accutane) or the treatment helps you by regulating your body´s hormone balance (for example oral contraceptives).
If topical creams individually prove inefficient, doctors will usually combine them with an oral antibiotic. The main active ingredient of most topical creams is benzoyl peroxide, which works well for numerous acne sufferers, but it should only be used in moderation, otherwise side effects may occur. Research has recently shown that benzoyl peroxide can cause early aging of your skin, if you use it too regularly or for a long period.
To get rid of your acne it is more than crucial to work together with a trained and experienced doctor you really trust. Secondly, be patient. Acne is serious skin condition, it is not something that will disappear overnight. In fact, even when you have found a treatment that works, your skin will usually get worse before it gets better. Follow your dermatologist´s advice and proceed to use the precribed treatment for at least 4-6 weeks, after this period you can expect to see first results. Don´ t get frustrated, if the first treatment you try doesn´t show any improvement. Expect to try quite a few treatments before you discover the one best working for you.
