Baby Acne and Its Causes

Roughly 20% of all infants acquire some type of acne referred to as baby acne or acne neonatorum. When maternal hormones cross the placenta they might stimulate the newborn’s sebaceous glands the result being the appearance of pimples on the face and body.
To date, neonatal acne seems to impact more male babies than females and for the majority the breakout presents itself around three weeks even though outbreaks at the time of delivery is not uncommon. It appears like a harsh, red rash which appears to be more prominent when the baby is crying or fussy.
Typically the types of acne evident in newborns are papules (solid elevations with no obvious fluids), pustules (small elevations containing pus-like material) or comedones (generally called blackheads).
While acne neonatorum might be due to the maternal hormones there are specific things that may cause further irritation. Milk and formula, in addition to spit-up that come in contact with the baby’s skin will worsen any acne on the face and neck. In these circumstances keep the skin as clean as possible by wiping any spilled milk or spit-up with a soft, warm cloth.
Simple methods to deal with baby acne
Baby acne usually vanish entirely by itself by the third to fourth month. In the case of your baby it is all cosmetic and apart from mild discomfort it does not place your child in any kind of danger.
Continue to keep the skin clean, avoid using soap and various other aromatic cosmetics on the skin. Detergents used for laundering clothes could also worsen acne so use mild detergents wheresoever possible and rinse completely.
If the baby has a uncommon case of severe acne then you must talk to your physician whereby topical medication may be given if the case warrants it. Topical solutions may contain benzoyl peroxide or retinoids. Since a lot of topical remedies may not be the most suitable alternative for use on the sensitive skin of your baby it would only be prescribed if there is a compelling reason to do so.
All in all, baby acne is no reason to worry as with time it will go away on its own with little if any treatment.
